Types of House Extensions
Rear Extension

Single-story rear house extensions are probably the most common type of extension since the majority of properties have enough garden length to accommodate them and there are generally no issues with the neighboring properties. They are usually used to extend the kitchen/dining/living area of the house and create a feeling of connection between the indoors and the garden.

Double-story rear house extensions are rarer because of potential Right to Light issues arising from the proximity of neighbors’ windows. This is why double-story rear extensions are unlikely to be achieved these days for semi-detached properties or terraced houses, although due to the distance from their closest neighbors, detached houses are often suitable for a double-story rear house extension.
Side Extension

Single-story side extensions are popular because they can provide additional areas such as bike storage, garage, utility room, downstairs WC/shower room, and perhaps an extended kitchen.
Double-storey side house extensions are more popular and provide homeowners a greater return on their investment when the project is complete. The two-story side extensions provide additional bedroom and/or shower rooms and bathrooms.

L-Shaped extension

A wrap-around type of extension is created by combining a side return extension and a rear extension together, creating an L-shaped wrap-around extension. Mostly they involve building the side wall closer to the neighboring building border and moving the rear wall of your property into the rear garden, creating an L-shaped house extension. This type of extension requires planning permission.
A wrap-around extension could also be great if you want an entire floor remodeling, an increase of your kitchen size, an additional dining room, a living room extension or to create an extra bedroom or guest-room.
Other additional benefits of this extension type are the high flexibility and the massive increase of value to your home.
